Vientiane Province
Vientiane Province sits in the north of the Vientiane area.The province is made up of 12 districts with its principle town at Phonhong.The southern and western parts close to the Mekong river are rice growing area’s.Tourist attractions include Nam Ngum Lake, this huge artificial lake was created by damming the Nam Ngum river and flooding around 250 sq km of forest land..It was conceived primarily for the production of hydro-electric power and flood control.Opportunities exist for boating and picnic’s around the many Islands in the lake and fine fish dishes can be had at he popular floating restaurants.
Vang Vieng is set against a backdrop of dramatic limestone mountains, Vang Vieng is a beautiful place catering for all types of travellers.Activities abound here including Tubing and Kayaking down the Nam Xong river. Tourist’s can also stroll along the riverbanks and explore the network of caves.Some of the caves are outlets for underground streams and are ideal places to cool off with a swim.Rock Cimbing is also becoming very popular here, with beginners to advanced climbing available.There are also plenty of restaurants and accomodation for all travellers.
Phou Khao Khouay(The National Protected Area)
This area encompasses a variety of landscapes and habitats ranging from sheer limestone cliffs and pristine river gorges to rough mountainous terrain. The forest habitat is home to a range of large animals including elephants,tigers, bears and gibbons as well as various reptiles, amphibians and birds.During the rainy season(May- Oct)the forest becomes green and lush, Waterfalls cascade down the mountains and vibrantly coloured butterflies fill the sky.
